A standard architectural shingle is a fiberglass mat with asphalt and granules on it. A Class 4 shingle is the same thing with a polymer-modified (SBS) asphalt that stays flexible, so when a hailstone hits it, the shingle dents and springs back instead of cracking. To earn the rating, a manufacturer has to drop a two-inch steel ball on the shingle from twenty feet, twice in the same spot, without the mat splitting — that's UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact class there is. Golf-ball hail bounces off. Tennis-ball hail, the May 21, 2024 kind, still leaves marks, but the roof stays watertight and usually stays off a claim.

What does Class 4 actually mean?
It's the top rating in the UL 2218 impact test: a two-inch steel ball dropped from twenty feet, twice on the same spot, with no crack in the mat. Class 3 uses a 1¾-inch ball; Class 4 is what Oklahoma insurers give the discount for.
How much is the insurance discount in Oklahoma?

Are Class 4 shingles heavier?
Slightly, on some lines. It's within what any modern truss is built for and it's not a factor on a house built after 1970.
