Broken Arrow was a railroad and farm town of a few thousand people until the 1970s, and the streets around the Rose District still are that town: the 1900s–40s bungalows, cottages and foursquares on the grid between Main Street and the tracks, the 1950s–60s ranches that filled in toward Elm and Kenosha, and the first suburban subdivisions of the 1970s and '80s off Houston, Aspen and 91st Street that ZIP 74012 is mostly made of. Layers, decking and chimneys
Three things come up on almost every old-town roof. Layers: the code caps a recover at two and we tear off regardless, because a new roof over old layers fails early. Decking: 1x boards under the oldest houses, sometimes gapped or rotten on the north slope, priced per sheet before the job. Chimneys: sixty-year-old step flashing under a bead of caulk is where the leak is, and we rebuild it in metal with a cricket behind it.
